Episode Twelve - Oprah's Calling

On today’s episode we have an interview that my daughter Mara did with peak performer plus member Maritza Parra at this year’s Super Conference, the SOB’s outrageous billboard that got my attention, and an answer to a question from a Glazer-Kennedy gold member. Welcome back to No B.S. Live TV and here I am wearing my tulliano shirt again this week, which is a brand new one I just got, which when I was in the menswear business this was my favorite sports shirt and they’re available around North America at all fine menswear stores – ask for them by name. And moving into the show, at our Super Conference this year, my daughter Mara sat down with peak performer plus member Maritza Parra who opened up about her business and shared some of her big money making strategies. Roll the tape.
Mara: Hi, this is Mara Glazer from Glazer-Kennedy Insider’s Circle and we’re here at the 2010 Marketing and Money Making Super Conference and sitting next to me is Maritza Parra; Maritza, can you tell everyone at home who you are and what you do?
Maritza: My name is Maritza Parra, and I teach people how to integrate, automate, and leverage social marketing tools and I started using social marketing tools before anyone even knew what they were. Basically what I did, I went through a very difficult period of my life, I got divorced and started having really bad panic attacks, and so I taught myself how to meditate, and journal, and I got out of that without using medications or anything, so I started a meet-up group on Meetup.com and I didn’t realize so many people would be into what I wanted to teach. So I started the group with the intention of teaching so that I could learn more and just giving. It was a free group, five people came the first time, and it grew every week into I had about 500 members. And so, I kind of built a buzz, I built a platform, and I teach people to do this to kick start speaking careers and Oprah found me. She found out about me and Harpo, her producers at Harpo called me, I took a photo of my phone because who gets a call from Harpo? So I took a photo because I wanted proof. And so I teach people how to use Meet Up, but we also teach people Twitter, and Facebook, You Tube, and how to integrate all of that into one system that brings you a lot of traffic and profits.
Mara: Great; so what is your number one no B.S. success strategy?
Maritza: Oh my gosh, I think that right now at this moment it has to be streamlining and automating, and streamlining as of January of this year – which is almost five months – I stopped reading emails. I outsourced all my emails, I gave a new virtual assistant – I told her the guidelines – these are the kinds of emails that I need these messages, these are things that you need to deal with and we set up systems for her to deal with the things that I don’t need to do. I was really inspired by Dan not allowing himself to be reactive to other people’s whatever they need, and taking charge of his own time, so I decided to do that and it’s been so freeing. And then the automation part, there’s so many tools for social marketing, and now even direct marketing, that I’m learning about with you guys, that’s automated that you can get things done for you where you do what you do best and everything else just runs in the background.
Mara: I think I need to take a lesson from you to automate my email because I totally need to stop with it.
Maritza: It becomes a rabbit hole.
Mara: Yeah, I can see that.
Maritza: You end up on everybody else’s agenda except your own. Mara: Good for you; so what are you doing to dominate in your niche in your market?
Maritza: Oh my gosh, what I’m doing excites me so much; I’m basically eating my own cooking is what I’m doing. I practice what I preach. Facebook is the number two website in the world. Twitter is the 12th website in the world. YouTube is the 3rd website in the world. Ezine Articles is 130, Meet Up is 540 – these websites have massive traffic. Most people think you put up a website and build it and they will come, just like the movie, but that’s not what’s going to happen. You put up a website and you’re like a spec in the universe, and I have a video talking about this and I have crickets in the background because that’s what it’s like. You put up a website and nobody’s going to come unless you point traffic from all of these sources to your website and attract people – and Google juice, like I call it. So that’s basically what I’m doing. I’m using what teach to bring massive traffic.
Mara: So what is your number one business strategy that you’d like to share with everybody watching this today?
Maritza: Well, I think my number one business strategy would definitely be to once you get the massive traffic and profits and use social marketing tools to drive people to your site, focus on follow up. Focus on follow up because so many people fail there and fail in implementing systems, and here I’ve learned so much about that. Another thing that I think is really important is find groups of people who are going to help you focus more and kind of pull you into being more than what you think you can be for yourself. With GKIC, I love it here so much. In the beginning I just got the newsletters and I would devour every one, now I’m in peak performers, and we had our first meeting a few months ago. We have been making so much more money since then. We had a 997 product, and the people said – our group said you guys are under charging, which most people are doing, and we added a five to the front of the 997, we have less clients, more money, and a better quality of clients. So find people who are not doing what everybody else is doing and stick with them.
Mara: Thank you; so how are you implementing GKIC style marketing in your business?
Maritza: Well, I think that what I’m doing is I’m clearly focusing on the transformational value that I bring to my clients, and so as I’ve gotten more focused on my message, that comes through in everything – in my website, in my email copy, and everything. So I think that’s extremely important.
Mara: And since you’ve been learning from Dan and from Bill, how has your business improved? You talked about it a little bit before, but if you could elaborate a little bit more that would be great.
Maritza: Well, gosh I wish I had some statistics of actual – I don’t know if you could do that though – but we’ve made a lot more money, our clients are just – I’m absolutely in love with them because I think as they have more skin in the game they actually take a lot more action than the people who invest less, and it’s the same with Peep. I’m with you guys at a higher level, so I’m stepping up and investing more of my time, and energy, and focus in my own business.

This week’s S&D comes to you all the way from sunny Dillen, South Carolina where a well known tourist trap located on I-95 is using outrageous – my favorite kind of marketing – billboards to draw crowds to their attraction. Now South of The Border, also known as SOB is the one stop pit stop for road trippers and locals alike. Now, I have never personally been there myself, but their outrageous advertising is so outrageous that I’ve heard of them and their marketing all the way up here at beautiful Baltimore, Maryland. You see, South of The Border did something that’s very, very smart. Not only had they come up with some very clever and outrageous billboards, which we will take a look at in just a few seconds, but they have actually sandwiched their highway oasis with these outrageous billboards. This way, you can’t miss it and you almost have to stop to see what this place is all about and if you ever go there, the place is packed, so you know that people have to stop. So let’s take a look at some of these billboards. The first one is: you never sausage a place, the second one is: chilly today, hot tamale, the third is: too much tequila? The fourth is: keep yelling kids, they’ll stop, and the fifth one is: shalom. Now, what’s really the big marketing lessons here? Two fold when you actually go back and look at these again. Number one is frequency – it’s what we teach at Glazer-Kennedy marketing. it’s not seeing just one billboard and then you’re done, you just keep seeing them over, and over, and over again because after you start seeing them you start looking for them; you start looking for the next one. It makes you want to stop to see what this outrageous place is all about. The second thing this, one of the smartest things anybody and do with billboard marketing which is giving the distance – telling people exactly what to do. In this particular case, they tell them how many miles until the next stop, what exit to get off of, it’s directing traffic, which is a very smart strategy with billboard marketing. When I studied billboard marketing many years ago, I learned that the smartest thing that you can do with any billboard is say get off at this exit. So there you have it, this week’s S and D marketing example, and if you can put billboards in your business and do it the right way it can really pay off big time.
Now it’s time for my favorite segment – ask Bill that’s me! So this week’s question comes from gold member Wendal Divera all the way from Hawaii and he asks: Bill, how can I effectively re-educate existing customers to buy more often? Well, Wendal, that’s a good question and once again like normal questions I’m choosing, they’re not really simple answers but let me give you some really important things to think about in order to educate your customers to buy more often. The first thing is that in order to get people to buy and buy more often from you, there always has to be a good exchange of value for money. So you have to look at what am I giving people in order to get their money in return? So with saying that, a big thing that I always like to do is just give people great value for free. So for example, No B.S. Live TV – all we’re doing is giving all of our online friends good value and it’s no cost. You can come here for free and see this every week. So think about what can I give away for value and also what can I give away for free to build relationships with people? The next thing I would tell you is this – is that frequency is important. Same answer I gave before about the billboards is you just can’t ignore people. As a matter of fact, for every month that you ignore somebody, you lose ten percent of the influence that you had with them. So you can’t ignore people at all, so again, frequency is very, very important as far as getting people to buy more often. And then here is the last thing, and this is the one that kind of like sky rockets, which is to make yourself influential. So now you have to figure out, how can I be influential? Last week I talked about the fact that we made available Dan Kennedy’s Influential Writing Workshop which is Dan’s best work I’ve ever seen him put together although all of his resources are great, but that’s all about making himself influential which is exactly what we have done here at Glazer-Kennedy as well. So if you could give great value, do a lot of good frequency, and make yourself influential, you’ll have people wanting to give you more of their money more frequently because they want to do business with people that give them a good value and also are influential to them.
